29-12-2006 The Prime Minister Călin Popescu Tăriceanu claimed yesterday that Romania could recover the differences regarding the European Union in 20 years. “The Romanians have chances to reach the level of European if the economy of Romania will continue to increase constantly and if the political specter will be stable. On the contrary, Romania could need 40 years to recover the discrepancies that separate it from the community space”, said the prime minister. Tăriceanu emphasized the fact that the necessary measures for reaching the European standards must be sustained also by the Romanian political class. “Unfortunately, in Romania there is no complete political maturity, which attracted suspicion and mistrust from the part of the European officials several times”, he added. Regarding our country’s adhering to the European Union, the Chief of the Government believes he will determine price reductions, because of competition, and the increase of the number of work places, because of investments. At the same time, he admitted he does not feel the joy he had imagined two years ago having in the moment of the adhering and this because he realized the huge responsibilities the Government and the prime minister have, which refer to the necessity of continuing the reforms and to the transformation of Romania. On the other hand, the prime minister rejected the idea that the Romanians will go through a period of sacrifices after the 1st of January 2007. “The adhering of Romania and Bulgaria is very important for the history of Europe”The president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barrosso, claimed yesterday that the adhering of Romania and Bulgaria to the European Union, on the 1st of January 2007, is very important for the history of Europe”, wishing, at the same time, “welcome” to the two countries.” “The adhering was possible because of an impressive process of reforms, and these two new member states will make our union stronger. The adhering of Romania and Bulgaria makes our European family richer and more diverse”, he said. Jose Manuel Durao Barroso recognized the reform process “wasn’t always easy”, and emphasized that it wasn’t achieved “to satisfy the Bruxelles institutions”, but to modernize Romania and Bulgaria, so that they can become democratic and more efficient. “The effort was worth it”, sustained the president of the European Commission, mentioning that the Union will manifest its solidarity towards its new members through a “Generous support”, under the form of structural and agricultural funds. In exchange, according to a Gallup Poll made by the “Infratest dimap” Institute, 53 % of the Germans do not agree with the European Union expansion on the 1st of January 2007 with Romania and Bulgaria. 38 percent of the citizens are in favor of the extension with Romania and Bulgaria. The skepticism characterizes especially the sympathizers of the Christian Democrat Union, which reject in a percentage of 62 % the adhering of the two states. The state must pay 60 million euros for the ransom of Bran castleThe representatives of Brasov have at their disposal two weeks to decide whether they will ransom or not Bran castle. The current owners are now asking 60 million euros for the castle- a much bigger sum than the initial estimations, which stopped to 25 million. The president of Brasov District Council, Aristotel Căncescu , called the counselors to take a decision regarding the faith of the museum. They hope to find support from the Ministry of Culture and Cults in order to be able to ransom the castle. In the case that neither Brasov District Council nor the Ministry of Culture and Cults are interested in the offer, the Bran castle will be vended to the private buyers. Bran castle, whose first documentary authorization dates since November 1377, is one of the most important tourist destinations from Romania. Slovenia will open the job market for Romanians and Bulgarians The Slovenian Government decided to open the job market for Bulgaria and Romania. “Workers from neither of the two countries will endanger the Slovenian labour market” is shown in a statement of the Slovenian Government. The Chamber will supervise monthly the foreign people’s employment. Should there be any disorders in the labour market, the chamber will have the possibility to activate a saving clause. European experts do not exclude the possibility of anticipated elections or a prime-minister replacement in Romania Jean-Michel De Waele, a political sciences professor at the Free University in Brussels, a specialist in problems related to Central and Eastern Europe, warned that Bulgaria and Romania “are far from being ready” for the adherence to the European Union. “Whereas at economic level an important increase is expected, at the politic and social level the perspectives are much less favourable. The Romanian and Bulgarian Governments have done everything to meet the European exigencies, making reforms in all areas, but once inside the EU, the authorities will face the same problems as the new EU members of Central Europe. In these countries, the economic increase took place, but a great percentage of the population is living in harsh conditions”, said De Waele. He also said that the political agreement in favour of the EU integration will disappear and an intensification of the political instability will soon be visible. “I think there will be elections or a prime-minister replacement in Romania very soon, in January or February”, he stated.
